24. Too many ideas
Having too many ideas can be as much of a problem as not having any ideas at all.
People feel paralyzed by too much choice. Psychologists say that the ideal number of options to choose from is three. It’s overwhelming when you have many more—you know the feeling when you’re in a restaurant where the menu is excessively long.
When you’ve got too many choices and come to make a decision, you’re not only motivated by what you might gain but also driven by fear of what you might lose. What if you get it wrong?
If it feels impossible to choose, the choice you make is to do nothing at all. You’ve heard it before, but it really is a useful maxim to live your life by: It feels better to regret the things you do than the things you don’t do. (Plus, we rarely regret making the wrong choice quite as much as we think we will.)
There are no wrong decisions in life. Often there are several possible “right” choices for the big decisions we make.
Everything you do will end up becoming part of your story, and often the choices that at first appear to be the biggest mistakes end up being our greatest blessings.
If you’re a habitual procrastinator when it comes to choosing, learn to value the time you’re wasting as much as you value the decision-making process itself.
Three things to help you choose
Let it go for a week. Put your conscious decision-making on hold to switch off the analytical part of your brain. This gives your creative, intuitive brain a chance to kick in. Pay closer attention to your dreams and listen to your intuition.
Tune in to your body. Join a half-day meditation or yoga workshop to help you become more aware of your physical body.
Give yourself a deadline and just choose.
